Mr. Hugh Clayton Welsh Jr.'s Obituary
Hugh Clayton Welsh Jr., born on September 16, 1934 in Houston, went to his Lord and Savior on August 20, 2014. He was a long-time resident of Pearland, Texas.
After graduating high school from Lamar High (Houston) in 1952, he followed in his father’s footsteps and attended Rice University. Upon graduating with a Business Economics degree in 1956, he went straight into the workforce, working with his grandfather at Hogan-Allnoch in downtown Houston.
He later found his work in the life insurance world and landed jobs as an underwriter at American General Life Insurance Company (Houston), American National Insurance Company (Galveston), Life of the Southwest (Dallas), and was Chief Underwriter at American Security Life (San Antonio). He retired after spending the last ten years of his work back at American National Insurance Company (Galveston) in 1999.
Hugh was always a huge fan of Rice University. While he was growing up, he was able to spend time sitting on the bench of the football team since his father, Dr. Hugh Clayton Welsh Sr., was the team doctor. Upon graduating from Rice, he became a football season ticket holder for more than 40 years. He loved attending games at Rice Stadium but some of his most memorable games were the ones where he got to travel with the team, notably to Hawaii and New Orleans. Along with watching football, he had a passion for playing golf. He finally hit his life-long goal of a hole-in-one after he turned 79 last year.
Hugh is preceded in death by his sister Nancy Welsh Robbins in 2010. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Connie Patton Welsh, and four kids, Clayton Welsh (53), Edina Welsh Sauer (51), Tim Welsh (50), and Adrian Welsh (33). He has seven grandchildren. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. His elaborate storytelling will always be ingrained in our hearts as well as his passion about the Bible.
The family would like to thank all of the people who have supported Hugh through all of the years. They especially want to thank Jack Manly and the members of Shadycrest Baptist Church.
The memorial service will be conducted at 10 o’clock on Monday, the 25th of August, at SouthPark Funeral Home in Pearland, Texas. In lieu of flowers and customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of your choice.
