Herma Nell Tafelski (née Balzer), aged 87, passed away on June 23, 2024, in Pearland, Texas. Born on April 16, 1937, in Houston, Texas, she was a cherished member of her community and a beacon of love and strength to her family.
Herma Nell graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1955. In 1956 she married Floyd and began raising her three daughters. In 1980 she embarked on a fulfilling career at Houston Lighting & Power Company in the Credit Department, where she worked for 15 years. Her encore career which she truly loved was with St. Helen Catholic Church in Pearland for another 15 years, where she made lasting friendships.
A faithful parishioner, Herma Nell was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church in Pearland from 1968 until her death. Prior to that, she was a member of St. Philip Neri in Houston. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and commitments.
Known for her sweet and strong nature, Herma Nell was often described as a "sweetheart" and was revered for her determination, dedication to her family and faith. She supported her husband, Floyd, in the Knights of Columbus, she was a 55 year member of Catholic Daughters, and was an active community member, making friends across Texas. Herma Nell relished the holidays, particularly Christmas and the 4th of July, celebrating with elaborate decorations and special gatherings. An avid cook and baker, she loved preparing a variety of dishes and had a fondness for lemon desserts.
Herma Nell is survived by her daughters, Patricia Davila (Ruben) of Pearland, Lauren Perry (Judd) of Wharton, and Donna Tafelski of Friendswood grandchildren Christy Walker (Mike), Ruben Davila (Teresa), Monica Buentello (Ben), Jeannette Carrasco (James), and Jillian Loera (Nick); and great grandchildren Makavla, Kaitlyn, Adrianna, Bella, Allie, Luke, Jacob, Jocelvnn, Juliette, Joanna, Caspla, Ethan, and Wyatt.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Floyd A. Tafelski: her parents, Ornell Hillebrand Balzer and Herman Balzer; and her brother, Bertram H. Balzer
The family would like to thank the caregivers, med techs, and staff in Memory Care at The Reserve in Pearland for the care they provided Herma Nell during the time she was a resident. They would also like to thank Harbor Hospice, especially Debbi Moreno, for the medical care provided over these past few years. It is truly appreciated.
Visitation will be held at St. Helen Catholic Church, 2209 Old Alvin Road Pearland, TX, at 8:00 AM on Friday, June 28. A rosary will be recited at 9:00 AM under the care of the Catholic Daughters, followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM presided by Reverand James Courville. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 1310 N. Main St., Pearland, TX. South Park Funeral Home, located at 1310 N. Main St., Pearland, TX 77581, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Herma Nell's legacy of love, strength, and devotion will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
