Mr. Harvey Barber's Obituary
Harvey Barber, husband, father, and servant of God, was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on Monday, November 25, 2013. Harvey was born on July 30, 1939 in Paris, Texas to Herb and Nita Barber and he grew up in Alvin, Texas. During his teenage years, Harvey worked at Barber's Service Station on Hood Street in downtown Alvin. He was a lifelong athlete who excelled in many sports, especially tennis, and he was inducted into the Alvin Independent School District Hall of Honor for athletes in 2009. One of the defining moments of Harvey's life occurred when he was in 10th grade and Jean Lindsey, his future wife, spotted him walking across the rotunda at Alvin High School. They went on several dates in high school and rekindled their romance in their college years during which Harvey attended Texas A&M and Jean attended Sam Houston State University. Following his graduation from A&M in 1961, Harvey and Jean were married. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Fort Worth where Harvey enrolled in Southwestern Seminary. He went on to earn a Doctorate of Ministry from Southwestern, the first such degree awarded by the school. Harvey's work in the ministry spanned four decades of service in churches throughout Texas and in Denver, Colorado. After being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the late 1980s, Harvey continued to serve as pastor of First Baptist Church Seabrook for twelve more years. His grace, determination, and positive outlook in the face of this debilitating disease served as an enormous source of inspiration to his family and all who knew him. Harvey was a sharp dresser, a loyal Aggie, a lover of red cars, and a connoisseur of good Texas BBQ. He was a loving husband to Jean, his wife of 51 years, and a supportive and engaged father to his two children, Chris and Diane. Harvey is survived by his wife, Jean, his son, Chris and his partner Gregg, his daughter, Diane, and her partner Karen, and his brother, Gary, of Tampa, Florida as well as nieces, nephews, friends and family members who loved him dearly. A memorial service to celebrate Harvey's life will be held on Saturday, November 30 at 10:30AM at First Baptist Church Seabrook. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Harvey's name to the Houston Area Parkinson's Society, www.hapsonline.org.
