She was just one of the best human beings that ever lived. She walked in beauty, grace, mercy and humility.
Of all my Alvin High School friends, Gwen (and husband Kim) was the only one who ever come to visit me in Canada at Gracefield Camp. My husband and I felt so honoured to host them. They took such a keen interest in everything we were doing in the ministry here. Even though we had been apart for decades after high school, our lives had many similarities--working with youth, serving at Camp, bearing witness to Jesus our Lord and Saviour. Even our love of nature and music and habit of scrounging for craft materials had similarities.
When we traveled to the Gulf Coast to take my special brother David on camping trips, we would get together with Gwen and Kim for a seafood dinner. Gwen always made David feel so special. She treated him with great respect. Gwen made everybody feel special and loved. It's one of the ways she reflected God's love to all around her.
On December 4th, I was as yet unaware of Gwen's departure to be in the nearer presence of the Lord. I was making bread, and as I worked the dough, I had an intense experience of Gwen being close by. It was an experience of pure joy. My heart was warmed, and I found myself thinking about what a treasure is Gwen. Now I realize she was just dropping by to say farewell, and remind me that all of life is Good.
Gwen's was a life well-lived, not without pain and hardship, but good, by the grace of God. I feel blessed to have shared the journey with her.
Kim, our condolences on the loss of your missional partner. Thanks for the phone call that let me know she was in her last days, and allowing me to say a brief good-bye.
Grace & Peace,
Dorothy Herbert
Kim, I am so sorry that you have lost your wife and best friend of many years. My prayers are for you to have the comfort of knowing that she is free of pain and enjoying her beautiful mansion.
Gwen and I were childhood friends of the same age and used to enjoy seeing each other through the years when we were able. Even though we grew up, moved apart and did not get to see each other as often as we would have liked, her memory will always be with me. Now I wish I would have taken time to go for some visits. We used to see each other a church conventions. I will miss her, knowing that I cannot go for those visits, but I will have peace knowing that she is now free of pain. I will someday get visit her again in heaven.
Our family loved Gwen.
