Mr. Gustavo Alejandro Herrera's Obituary
Gustavo Alejandro Herrera
Born November 9, 1988, in Houston, Texas. Passed away peacefully on March 9, 2019, at age 30, surrounded by family and friends after a brief battle with an aggressive cancer. Gustavo had a passion for learning throughout his life and wholeheartedly believed that by putting good into the world, it is possible to inspire other people to do good, and thus make the world a better place.
Gustavo graduated with Honors from Bellaire High School in 2007, after attending T.H. Rogers Secondary School. At Bellaire, he excelled academically and artistically in Debate, the Honor Society, and as a drummer in the school’s jazz band. He enrolled at Rice University in 2007 to further his dedication to the law. He graduated in 2011 and during his tenure served as Sid Richardson Chief Justice, O-Week Advisor, Officer for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars Rice Chapter, and as a member of the Rice Rugby Club. After this time, he devoted himself wholly to the care of his mother during her grueling 3 year battle with cancer. He was with her every day until her untimely passing in 2016.
Gustavo’s greatest gifts to the world were his enormous heart, unwavering integrity, fierce loyalty, and his commitment to the people in his life whom he cared about and who cared for him. His caring nature and unconditional support is what led to him forming such long lasting friendships and deep personal connections. His ability to maintain friendships, despite the passage of time or physical distance, was one of his most admirable virtues. Gustavo loved music, film, television, reading, and staying active, and was happiest when surrounded by family, friends, and his dogs.
Gustavo joins his mother Gilda Amy Herrera in Heaven. Gustavo leaves behind his father, Jose Gustavo Herrera, sister Alexis Monique of Austin, and brother Zachary John of Dallas, Grandparents John and Lupe Salazar of Houston (who lovingly called him “Gusty Bear”), many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He also leaves behind his loyal canine companions Luke and Mattie. He will be missed by all.
Our family would like to thank all of Gustavo’s friends and classmates for their many prayers, visits, kind words, and support shown during this difficult time.
Also, special thanks to the wonderful staff at CHI St. Luke’s-Baylor.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, the 23rd of March, from 9AM to 11AM, with Church Services to follow, at Southpark Funeral Home on 1310 N Main St., Pearland, TX.
