Evelyn Therese Wilkerson
September 3, 1929 - December 12, 2024
A native Houstonian, Evelyn Therese (Culmer) Wilkerson was born Sept. 3, 1929, to Howard Bertram Culmer and Mary Catherine McHale. She grew up in the Heights until her family moved to West University in 1940. She attended Christ the King School and St. Anne's School and graduated from St. Agnes Academy in 1947. After graduation, Evelyn worked at Sanitary Farm Dairies for about three years. She met Charlie Buford Wilkerson in August 1948, and they were engaged in January 1949 amid a rare Houston snowfall. They married on July 25, 1950. Charlie and Evelyn lived in Bellaire before moving to Overbrook. Bubba and Puddie, as they were known to friends, family, and neighbors, lived in Sagemont Park since 1981.
Puddie was a master at baking pies from scratch and continued her father's tradition of making
"Tootsie Rolls" out of leftover dough. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and watching game shows, especially Jeopardy!. She also loved going to the casinos in Louisiana.
Survivors include 8 children, Karen Havens (Robert Anderson) of Petal, Mississippi; Glenn Wilkerson, Mary Crochet and husband John, Stephen Wilkerson and wife Penny, Kathy Cross and husband Robert, Johnny Wilkerson, George Wilkerson, and David Wilkerson and Wife Becky, all of the Houston area, 17 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
Evelyn's husband of 57 years Charlie preceded her in death in February 2008. She was also preceded in death by her parents, 10 siblings, son Charlie Wilkerson Jr. in 2017, and grandson Joshua Wilkerson in 2010.
Friends and relatives of Evelyn will cherish many wonderful memories, and she will stay forever in their hearts.
