Eugene Ernest Hlavaty's Obituary
Gene Hlavaty went to heaven peacefully in his sleep on January 14th, 2022 at the age of 85. He was a loving, faithful and compassionate man. He leaves his wife of 17 years Nanette DeVillier Hlavaty and his four children, Suzanne Hlavaty Duff and husband Johnny, Larry Hlavaty and wife Terri, Lisa Hlavaty and Linda Hlavaty Bienvenu and husband Mark. His two grandsons Justin and Zachery. Also his sister Marion Hlavaty Shimmon and husband Don and sister in law Christy Hlavaty.
Gene was born in Wharton County on December 10, 1936. His youth was spent hunting and fishing and enjoying the life of a country kid with his brothers. He loved his country and proudly served by serving in the Army for four years.
Gene retired from Champions Paper Mill after 35 years where he was supervisor. He also worked on the committee to organize the Champion Retires Luncheon each year. Raising his family he also did roofing and worked at Harris Welding Shop.
Gene never met a stranger and also had a kind word for everyone. He had worked with Habitat for Humanity since 2010 and got great satisfaction helping those that needed it. During the summer’s months, Gene would bring watermelon for the workers to enjoy and cool down
at lunch which they all looked forward to. He was a member of the Hawaiian Akine Club with Nanette and loved to help cook food for their luaus and participate in club activities.
Gene’s faith was very strong. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church where he ushered, mowed grass and supported ministries anywhere he was needed. He organized the men’s breakfast, cooked for soup suppers and vacation bible school.
Gene loved to be outdoors and travel. He hunted with his brother and would go take care of the lease just to be in the country. He loved mowing grass and taking care of his and Nanette’s yards by planting flowers and pulling weeds. Nanette and Gene made two trips to the Czech Republic on heritage tours
His smile and laugh was infectious and everyone loved him. He will be missed by all that knew him
