Eric Paul Veblen's Obituary
The Veblen family is mourning the loss of our beloved Eric, who recently passed away in the Dallas area. Eric was a wonderful brother, stepfather, uncle, and friend. His life was marked by kindness, a terrific sense of humor, a brilliant intellect, a strong interest in music and sports, a great love of cats, and especially a deep love for his family and many friends.
Eric spent his early years in Minnesota and California. He graduated from Santa Barbara High School and spent four years at Dartmouth College, followed by postgraduate studies at Yale University, where he earned a PhD in political science. After graduation, he became the managing executive for the Ford Foundation in Venezuela and later in Colombia, working on improving education for primary and high school students, as well as developing a graduate school of management for Latin American students.
Following several years in Latin America, Eric taught political science at Vassar College, and later at Texas A&M University. He was the author of The Manchester ‘Union Leader’ in New Hampshire Elections and was a contributing author of The Motivation of Politicians. He moved to the private sector in the 1990s, working in the field of personnel contracting and management.
In 1997, Eric married Joyce Sanders. This was an especially happy marriage until Joyce passed away nine years later. Although he never had children of his own, his close bond with his two stepchildren endured to the end of his life. Eric is survived by his four siblings, Louise McCloskey, David Veblen, Krista Dodson, and Carl Veblen; by his stepchildren Tyrone Sanders and Tawnya Sanders; and by the many nieces and nephews who adored their “Funkle” Eric. We will all miss him.
