Edwin (Ed) William Baker Jr.'s Obituary
Edwin (Ed) William Baker, Jr., age 76, peacefully entered the loving arms of our Lord on January 18, 2020. Ed was born in Weslaco, Texas on November 25, 1943 to Elizabeth Daniels and Edwin William Baker, Sr. He grew up in the Rio Grande Valley and moved to San Antonio while in High School. From early childhood, and throughout his entire life, Ed loved the outdoors. He spent many happy summers in Garner State Park as a young man and most of his favorite memories involved camping with his family in state parks from Texas to Colorado.
Ed married Clarice Baker in 1964. They had two sons, Rodney and Jeffrey. They were married for 31 years until her death in 1995. Ed and Clarice raised their sons in Pearland, Texas where he lived for 40 years. He was active in youth sports and enjoyed welding, woodworking and traveling. Ed passed his love of the outdoors to both of his sons whose fondest memories revolve around camping, hunting and fishing with their father. Ed was a devoted husband to Clarice until her death in 1995. He found love again with, Katie Marie, who he married in 1999 and to whom he remained devoted until his death.
Ed and his business partner, George Groschke, owned McGowen Cleaners serving the River Oaks area of Houston for 50 years until his retirement in 2015. After he retired, he and Katie moved to his family’s property in Gonzales, Texas. In the last years of his life, he endured and overcame many health challenges. Despite every setback he faced, he never lost his sense of humor and good nature. Ed cherished the simple things in life: spending time with his family, snuggling with his fur babies, Tink and Annie, in his recliner, and watching a good western while drinking a cold beer. He also loved mowing his property and giving Katie a hard time. Ed will be remembered best for his love and devotion to his family, his quick wit, his love of nature and the outdoors and his ability to appreciate the small moments of joy in life, despite any circumstance.
Edwin is preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth Daniels and Edwin William Baker, Sr.; first wife, Clarice; and brother, Tommy Baker.
Ed is lovingly survived by his wife, Katie Marie Baker; 2 sons and their spouses, Rodney and Nancy Baker, Jeff and Tracey Baker; and grandchildren Nicholas and Krystal Baker, Colby and Cannon Casey; brother Jimmy Baker and wife, Susan; and sister Melanie Baker Allen and husband, Don.
The Baker family will be receiving friends and family for visitation on Saturday, January 25, 2020 from 12-2 at SouthPark Funeral Home. Funeral services will start at 2:00 PM with burial to follow at SouthPark Cemetery.
