Mrs Cicely M. Palms' Obituary
Mrs. Cicely M. Palms, 91, of Sweeny, TX passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015 in Beaumont, TX.Mrs. Palms was born at the same time in the evening as the time her Father passed that morning.
She never had the opportunity to meet him and we all would like to think that she will see him now. He died at 30 something years young and after her quadruple by-pass she always thought that she was receiving the years that he missed. He was a Decorator/Carpenter by trade. Her Mom was a strong lady and raised them all by herself. She scrubbed school floors for a living to provide for them. There were times they wanted her to adopt some of the kids out but her Mother hung on and raised them all. At the time of her birth the Preachers wife suggested the Mercy for her because of all the hardship her Mother would be facing. Hence her Mom named her Cicely Margaret Mercy House. She always went by the nickname Peg. In England where she was born Peg is short for Margaret. Growing up she was close to all her Brothers and Sisters. I have heard many stories of shenanigans that her and her younger Brothers Cyril and Raymond have played. She was a very beautiful lady in all senses of the words. After having a photo done in a Reading, England photography studio they had placed the picture of her in the window for the longest. She had worked in a munitions factory during WWII and saw some really incredible things that our generation might not fathom. During WWII she met our Father. He was in the Army Military. It was one evening after work during the black out times in England that she met the love of her life, our Father, Edward Finch Palms while walking home with her two other co-workers and my Father was with two of his Battalion friends. They all went to a Restaurant and got acquainted. She told me upon leaving the Restaurant they paired up and one of her girlfriends put her arm around my Daddy and said I know who I am with. My Daddy told my Mother to “Grab a wing” and from that day they dated and then married September 9, 1943. During furlows they traveled many places in England. One of which was Sherwood Forrest. They were blessed with Baby Francis in October of 1944. During this time my Father was stationed in Normandy, France. She prepared for herself and Baby Francis’ rather adventurous travel to the United States where our Father would join them at a later time after the war ended and he was discharged home. The ship she came over on was an Army transport ship and depth charges were being dropped in case subs or other enemy ships attempted to fire upon them. She arrived in New York Harbor as Peace was being declared and traveled by way of train from New York to Houston. She was met by her new Mother in law was very happy to meet her new Grandson but not so happy to meet her new “English” Daughter in law. She lived with Millwood Palms, Mother in law until my Fathers return home and then they moved into their own home. After Millwood grew older Mother took on the Holiday feasts and produced some of the best Holidays I will ever remember. She was a homemaker extraordinaire. In 1950 an addition to their family, a Daughter Dorothy Palms was born in England while on visit to see her Family again. Many years after, I was born in 1961 in Houston, Texas. She lost the love of her life in March of 1966 when I was only 4 ½ years old. She like her Mother raised us children alone. She was blessed throughout the years with 3 Grandchildren and numerous Great Grandchildren and even one Great Great Grandchild all of whom she couldn’t have been prouder. She has been first and foremost my Mother, my confidant and my Best Friend. If you could pick your Mother, Mother I pick you. No sweeter more loving Mother exists. In 1977, the year of Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee, I was fortunate to go back to England and meet the remaining family, be shown places where she was for dates with my Father and where she was born and many other Family memories. She loved people and was kind and good hearted.
She was preceded in death by her husband; Edward Finch Palms, parents; Henry and Nellie House, siblings; Albert, James, Arthur, Cyril, Violet, Dorothy and Margery. Mrs. Palms was survived by children; Edward Palms and wife Beverly, Dorothy Palms and Laura Johnson and husband Edward, grandchildren; Gaylon Palms and wife Emma, Aaron Palms and wife Tisha and Audra Taylor and husband Olyn, she is also survived by 7 great-grandchildren 1 great-great grandchild, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Thursday, December 3, 2015 at SouthPark Funeral Home 1310 North Main St. Pearland, TX 77581. Funeral services will be held 12:30 PM Friday, December 4, 2015 in the chapel of SouthPark Funeral Home. Burial will follow in SouthPark Cemetery.
