I came across this obituary while looking for Dr. Wood’s info to share with a person that has kidney cancer. Dr. Wood saved my life back in 2012 when I was diagnosed with kidney cancer again after my first diagnosis in 1962. With only having one kidney to work with, Dr. Wood carefully removed the RCC and kept the rest of my remaining kidney intact. I am sad to read of his passing and of not knowing he passed 5 years ago. He was truly a gifted surgeon and kind person that gave me the best possible outcome to live a longer life. May God bless his family and may his legacy continue on in those he shared his talent with at MD Anderson.

I was referred to Dr. Wood at MD Anderson in 2018 when my local doctor thought I had cancer of the kidney. Dr. Wood was just so brilliant in our pre-op meeting that I knew i was in good hands. After he performed the partial open nephrectomy, he came in a few days later to tell me it wasn't cancer and that it was a benign oncocytoma--very rare. I said "I bet you don't get to say that very often" (about no cancer) and he shook his head sadly, although he was quite happy for ME! He was a champion in helping people with kidney cancer survive and thrive. He took out the tumor, saving my collecting area, and i was cured. I know in lesser hands my kidney would not have been saved as it was deep in the kidney and in a tricky place. I was so impressed with the well-oiled (yet friendly) machine that is MD Anderson and especially with Dr. Wood. It's now Sept. 2025 and I am so sorry to hear that he died so young, taking that wonderful mind and beside manner with him. Condolences to his family. Michelle Gilson, Austin, Texas

I just called (10/30/24) MD Anderson wanting to schedule an appointment. Dr. Woods performed a partial nephectomy several years ago…2003. He was an awesome doctor, that’s why I never forgot him. I’m so very sorry and very sad to hear today of his passing. Thanks Dr. Woods for looking out for me. To your family I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Woods was such a wonderful person.

I am so sad to hear of his passing. He did surgery on my mom several years ago and because of this she had so many more years of life. We r from New Mexico and there we were told my mom would not survive the cancer. Dr Wood was not afraid of the cancer. He was a blessing to our family. I am so sorry for his family. How lucky we are to have had Dr Wood touch our lives with his skills and knowledge. I am at Md Anderson once again now with my sister. I hope we find resolution with her as we did with our mom several years ago.

Dr. Wood was such an amazing human being. He saved my life in removing my kidney which had a clear cell carcinoma. I enjoyed his company every time he and his entourage stopped by after surgery. On one occasion I was able to get him to laugh and two of his fellows came back to my room later to ask what I had said to make him laugh. He was a giant in his field and his presence will be missed and remembered for many years to come. I am certain that I am only one of so many people that he saved. My family and I are eternally grateful. It isn’t possible to Thank you enough Dr. Wood. I pray for God to grant you and your family His very best. I know you gave me a gift I cannot repay.

I just saw the obituary that Dr. Wood had passed. He saved my life like many others. He called me to persuade me to go through with my surgery because I did not want to go through with the surgery. My tumor had grown from very small to 11 cm by 11 cm. I would like to express my sympathy for such a great loss. Great and caring man that will be missed.

RIP Christopher Wood. You saved my life in 2005 when I was first diagnosed with RCC. You performed life saving surgery and removed my cancerous kidney. Unfortunately it metastasized and I'm still fighting the awful disease. Never in a million years did I think you would ever pass before me, especially considering you were younger. I feel an awful loss, because I knew you were always in my corner and ready to help me down at MDA if and when the time came. I remember seeing you and the smile on your face a few years when you learned that I was still alive all these years later. Thank you again for the extra life you gave me! I've had the chance to see kids graduate from high school and college. I've had the chance to witness both daughters get married and start families of their own, including grand kids! Thank you and some day I will see you on the other side. In the meantime, per your recommendation, I'm living each day to the fullest thanks to YOU!

There are no words to express the impact Dr. Wood had my family’s life. After a diagnosis of advanced renal cell carcinoma, we were truly blessed to receive a referral to MD Anderson and Dr. Wood. Through it all, Dr. Wood proved to be a man of great knowledge, skill, and compassion. After doing his part of the surgery, he was sitting with me when he got the call from the second surgeon saying that the tumor in the IVC as a direct extension and had been removed. He seemed as relieved as I was. Throughout some complications with fluid retention and an extended hospital stay, Dr. Wood continued to share his knowledge, skills, support, and compassion with me and my husband.
A few months later, an elderly lady who had also been diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma was given just weeks to live. The family had been told she wouldn’t make it until Christmas. We gave her Dr. Wood’s name, and she was able to get a referral to him. She celebrated that Christmas with her family, and many more.
To his wife, children, other family members and friends, our heartfelt gratitude for sharing this wonderful man with us. His legacy lives on through those whose lives he saved
