Billy Gene Byrd's Obituary
Our dad, Billy Gene Byrd, 92, died on June 24, 2024. He was born on February 19, 1932 in Flatonia, Tx to Clinie and Emma Laas Byrd. He was one of 7 children. His father died when he was 5 and dad often talked of the struggles they had as a family. He had to pick cotton as a child to help out the family and his education ended at 6th grade. But, dad never complained. It was what it was and he persevered. Dad was drafted into the army at a very young age and was sent to Korea. He never spoke of the war or watched war movies. Dad wasn’t a confrontational person. He liked the calm and quiet.
He married late. In fact, no one in his family thought he would get married but he found our mother, Christina Segundo Byrd, when he was 40. They were together 51 years until her death in Nov. 2023. He missed her dearly for she loved and cared for him very well.
Dad was a lover of anything sweet or anything covered in syrup. But, the love of his life, aside from mom, was cornbread. We heard that word a million times especially in his later years and mom would have cornbread on the counter daily.
He was a pushover for animals and loved many in his lifetime. Dad enjoyed being a Poppo to Bailey and Morgan. His face would light up when he knew they were coming over for they brought him incredible joy.
Dad spent 50 years or more working for Straus Frank automotive. When he retired, he kept busy riding his bike, walking the trails, doing lawn work, and fixing things around the house. His health issues took quite a toll on him and I know he wished his life to be active again. Dad is preceded in death by his wife, Christina, his parents, his brothers Albert, Floyd, Melvin, and his sisters Shirley and Vera .
He is survived by his daughters Renee Byrd, Samantha Allison(Robert), son Timothy Byrd, grandchildren Bailey and Morgan, and his dog Mickey.
Dad, you are now healthy and whole, reunited with those you love, and we hope you’re doing everything you’ve dreamed of. Love you.
