Mrs. Betty Jo Gilbert's Obituary
Betty Jo Gilbert went home to heaven to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday morning October 2, 2016. She died peacefully at home in Pearland, Texas, at the age of 83.
Betty was born in Kansas City, Missouri on March 29, 1933. She moved to Houston, Texas with her family when she was in Junior High school, and she attended San Jacinto High school in Houston. While attending the University of Houston, she met the love of her life, Richard L Gilbert. They were married on January 28, 1953, and were very happily married for more than 63 years.
Betty was a faithful, lifelong servant of her Lord Jesus Christ. She loved to tell others the Good News of Jesus. She and Richard were leaders in their church’s Evangelism Explosion witnessing program. Betty faithfully taught others the Bible, and she especially enjoyed teaching children about Jesus. She taught Sunday school, vacation Bible school and children’s church at her church, and was a children’s leader as well as a discussion leader in Bible Study Fellowship.
After staying home with her three young children, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Houston in 1965. Betty taught second grade in Pasadena, Texas for 21 years.
Love describes Betty very well … she loved her Lord Jesus, her husband Richard, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved and adopted others into her family. She loved traveling with her husband. She loved flowers, especially the ones in Hawaii.
Betty’s primary caregiver during her last eight years was her loving husband Richard. At a great personal sacrifice, he made good on his promise to allow Betty to continue to live in their home.
God also provided three wonderful women to care for Mom during the last five years, Joann Porter (who was the first to care for Mom in 2011), Connie Ferguson, and Olga Lopez Duarte. These women loved Mom and Dad dearly, and we consider them a part of our family. Thank you!
Betty’s family includes her loving husband of 63 years Richard Lee Gilbert, her children Katye Kole and husband James, Gail Fuller and husband Jim, Richard T Gilbert and wife Dianne. She had six grandchildren, Amy Fuller, Tim Milligan, Chris Milligan, Jeff Milligan, Travis Gilbert and James Gilbert. She had eleven great grandchildren, Whitney, Ellie, Kate, Skyler, Cash, Keller, Wyatt, Matthew, Elyra, Daniel and Katherine.
