Bessie Mae Hundl's Obituary
Bessie Mae (Starustka) Hundl, 86, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2017 in her home following a long, complicated illness. She was surrounded by dedicated family members and care givers who loved and cared for her.
Bessie was born on May 25, 1930 in Schulenburg, Texas where she was raised on her family’s farm. After a brave move as a very young adult woman, she came to Houston to work and shortly thereafter she met Edwin E. Hundl. They married on October 18, 1952 and started a family. Bessie stayed home to care for their home and children. Three children and a few years later, the decision was made to leave Houston and head for the suburbs. They built a new home in the Pearland area located in Brookside Village in 1968. They were very happy and proud of their new home and this is where they would remain for life. Both Edwin and Bessie were devout in their Catholic faith. They loved their new Parish home at St. Helen’s Catholic Church and Bessie became very involved as a Catholic Daughter. She also relished serving with Edwin and her family in the annual church bazaars. Her expert seamstress skills would prove her very valuable as she became known for the beautiful alter linens she so carefully made for her Parish. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t sew beautifully including clothes for herself, her children and countless lovely curtains. She was also quite famous for her amazing home-style cooking and baking skills. She could always be found in her kitchen cooking up something delicious or baking incredible kolaches and strudels- and of course she always put up and canned her very own fresh vegetables, jellies, pickles and salsas each and every year. One never went without being fed or offered something tasty if you stopped by Miss Bessie’s house! This was one of her greatest ways to show her love and she was always happy to teach others how to cook as well. She was a gifted cook, seamstress, caring wife, mother and grandmother. She will be remembered always and greatly missed.
Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Albenia Starustka; brothers, Erwin, Robert, Albert and Charlie Starustka; and her loving husband of over 60 years, Edwin E. Hundl.
She is survived by her 3 children, daughter, Nancy Netardus and husband Larry of Houston, Tx; daughter, Shirley Nowak and husband Elliott of Houston, Tx; son, Myron Hundl and wife Glenda of Brookside Village, Tx; 7 grandchildren, Marcie Fields (Tyrone), Troy Netardus (Crystal), Christopher (Miriam), Matthew and Andrew Nowak, Lindy Hundl-Howren (Clint), Shane Hundl (Dianna); 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to recognize and thank her very special care givers of the last 2+ years, Dawn Martin and Angela Costly who so lovingly cared for her and helped our family through this difficult time, along with Wendy Smith, Brandy McDonald and Trish Florian for their extra care and help when needed. An expression of thanks and gratitude is also extended to the entire hospice medical team…all the nurses, assistants and social workers who gave such excellent, loving care also. A special thanks as well to our neighbor, Mrs. Janet Huber, who so faithfully came each week to give her communion. Thank you all so much. May God bless you abundantly for being the hands and feet of Christ in what you so selflessly do.
