Mr. Bailey O. Timmerman's Obituary
Born on November 25, 1911 to Emily (Dochall) and John Timmerman of old Gay
Hill, Texas, Hiway 77 west of Rockdale. Attended Rockdale High School,
Allen Academy, and graduated from Texas A&M, class of 1939. Bailey worked at Hughes Tool Co., Houston, TX for 39 years in many different production areas and quality department until retirement in 1976. At Rockdale High and later at A&M, Bailey played football, baseball and track, and was an avid and competitive athlete for decades thereafter, playing minor league professional baseball in the East Texas League, and later semi-pro and amateur leagues in Houston into his 50's. His mother Emily said Bailey started playing baseball when he was barely old enough to walk, and we can testify that he didn't quit until he was barely able to walk. He met his wife Esther Bage of Giddings due to baseball acquaintances; Bailey and Esther were married on January 1, 1942, a union that lasted 68 years until Esther passed away March 5, 2010. The life and love they shared was clear and obvious to his last days; we rejoice that
they are together again. 'Bailey and Esther' - We can hardly say one name
without the other. They were loyal and supportive members of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Houston for almost 70 years. He was fond of entertaining his children, grandchildren, and his many friends with stories and recollections of the people and life in the 1910's, 20's and 30's around Gay Hill and Rockdale, exploits at his beloved Texas A & M, and other tales of teammates and opponents on the baseball diamond.
Many of Bailey's stories were about the people in the Gay Hill community - family, extended family, and neighbors - close and distant. He described that even as a child he competed with his older brother Walter to see who could pick the most cotton in a day. His descriptions would place you right there with him - 10 to 12 hours of the heat, the dust, the sweat, the stooped posture, the heavy cotton sack, the sharp pointed cotton boll husks, the bugs falling down his shirt collar, and of sleeping that night on a quilt next to the cotton field to get an early start before sunrise. They
Worked on the farm in those days (capital 'W', Worked). ------------------. Bailey is survived by his sister, Minnie Chalfant, daughter Sharon Graves and husband Mac, and her children Paul Sanderson, Stephen Sanderson and David Sanderson, son Terry and his wife Debbie and their daughter Laura, son Tim and his wife Marianne and their daughter Tricia Underwood and son Tim
Jr, six grandchildren and 9 great grand-children. Preceded in death by his
beloved Esther, his parents John and Emily; his older brother Walter; and his younger brother Frank. Bailey and Esther were together an icon of enduring trust, truth, love, and honor for generations of Timmermans, Sandersons, Bages, Underwoods, Karchers, and all the others whose lives they touched. Bailey and Esther are so deeply missed, but yet, in Christ and in us, they live. .----------------------.
