Mrs. Annie Laurie Hawkins' Obituary
Annie Laurie Griffith Hawkins, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and treasured friend, passed away on December 14, 2019 at the Park Manor Nursing Home in The Woodlands, Texas. Her death from Alzheimer’s disease followed a lengthy convalescence.
Born on February 17, 1925 in Uvalde, Texas, where her father was serving as a minister, Annie was the third daughter of David and Appalonia Griffith. Her family moved to Conroe when she was a child and she was a lifetime resident of Harris and Montgomery counties.
As a child Annie was remarkably vivacious and high-spirited. She enjoyed music and dancing, later imparting a love of those performance arts to her daughter Tina. In her teenage years Annie had grown to a beautiful young woman, widely admired for being a help to her family, an outstanding student and athlete, an active church member, a positive force in the community, and a loyal friend.
She met Ervin Hawkins in her junior year at Conroe High School. Following their graduation Ervin and Annie were married and took up residence in Conroe just as World War II started. After Ervin’s service in the U.S. Navy, the couple moved to Houston and worked in successful careers in structural engineering and in the Port of Houston until retirement.
Annie enjoyed cooking, painting, sewing, crafts and time with family. After Ervin’s passing 1990, Annie focused her energies on their daughter and grandchildren, eventually relocating to Montgomery to be near them.
Annie is predeceased by her parents David and Appalinia Griffith, sisters Odelie Martin, Frances Dehtan, Della Mae Spencer, and Virginia Barker, husband William Ervin Hawkins, and niece Sarah Ann Martin. She is survived by her daughter Tina L. Hudgens of Montgomery and her grandsons Jarrod of Houston and Blake of Montgomery. She also leaves a number of nephews and nieces, and many friends.
Graveside services are scheduled for January 11, 2020 in the Conroe Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
