Mr. Alvin V. Martin's Obituary
Alvin V. Martin, 89, passed away at his home in Pasadena, Texas on Sunday, July 12, 2009. He was preceded in death by Marion Lucille, his beloved wife of 44 years, and his sisters O'Neal Nelson, Beatrice Russell and Gertrude Russell. He is survived by his children, Helen L. Martin, D.V.M., and Francis M. (Frank) Martin, D.V.M.; sisters Bertha Hall, Rubye Easley and Lillian Bailey, all of Shreveport, Louisiana, Dorothy Williams of Hempstead, Texas, and Lucille Bether of Fallbrook, California; numerous nieces and nephews; a large extended family including the "grandchildren" of his heart, Zachary Nathanson, Coby Nathanson and her fiance, Frank McElroy, Andrew and Sam Pinkston and a host of loving friends who all miss "Big Al." A native of Castor, Louisiana, he was a star basketball player, a graduate of Louisiana State University, where he received his B.S. degree in economics and his M.B.A. He was nationally known throughout his career as an expert in U.S. Customs duty drawback. He was a member of Pasadena Rotary, B.P.O.E. and a life member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Langham Creek Utility District for almost 20 years and very active with the Association of Water Board Directors - Texas. A proud veteran of World War II, he served as an air traffic controller in the South Pacific. Visitation will be held at SouthPark Funeral Home in Pearland, Texas from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15 with funeral services with military honors conducted in the chapel of SouthPark Funeral Home on Thursday, July 16 at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow at SouthPark Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine payable to Texas A&M Foundation (mail to CVM Development Office, 4461 TAMU, College Station, TX, 77843-4461) or a charity of one's choice.
