During World War II, Agnes McClelland worked at the front desk of the George Hotel in Edinburgh , Scotland. There she met an American soldier on furlough from his base in England, Charles M. Sharp. She was instantly attracted to this handsome man in uniform, and he was drawn to the pretty lady behind the desk. This connection was the beginning of a very special romance. Charles was only able to see her a few more times before his tour of duty ended and he returned home to the United States. They corresponded by mail for two years before he proposed, and she accepted. In 1943, he arranged for her travel to the United States so they could be married.
