If you had met him you knew him as Mr. D or Morris. He’d always say “Spelled like the cat.”. Referencing the famous cat from the 9Lives cat food commercials.
Though he may have been short in stature, he was at times larger than life. He did not conform to social norms. Mr. D had his own way of doing things and was at times unconventional. My dad was scrappy and confident, full of color and had an appreciation for the flavor of life.
Known for his eccentric fashion style, he will be remembered for his straw hat in the summer or his felt one in the winter. He hated the cold and loved summertime. Though he stopped smoking years ago, Mr. D will always be remembered for the sweet smell of Cavendish tobacco bellowing from his iconic pipe.
Mr. D was a social creature and made friends every where he went. He’d strike up a conversation with anyone and win them over with his stellar smile and rapier wit. He could walk into any store and a chorus of “Hey Mr. D” or “Hello Morris” would ring out.
He loved cars and auto racing. He’d reflect with fondness on the racing days of his youth. Mr. D collected cars, some cool, some not so much, but they were always a project. He dreamed of owning an Aston Martin, but never came upon one.
He loved animals and was always kind to strays. My dad loved his best friend kitty Stossal who passed on right before he passed. Hopefully they are together. Mr. D will be missed. The world is a less colorful place without him in it.
